He is being held on a capital murder charge, with bail set at $500,000.- Advertisement – Mr. Hassell’s family could not be reached for comment on Thursday. It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Antone had a lawyer. His relatives could not immediately be reached for comment, and a spokeswoman for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office said she had no additional information.Mr. Hassell, 30, was best known for his roles on the NBC show “Surface” and in the 2010 movie “The Kids Are All Right.” He was shot outside his girlfriend’s apartment in Grand Prairie, a Dallas suburb, around 1 a.m., according to his representative, Alan Mills. The actor was shot in the abdomen and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, Mr. Mills said. – Advertisement – Mr. Antone was arrested in Dallas, where he lives, a spokesman for the Grand Prairie police, Officer Mark Beseda, said by telephone on Thursday. HealthLifestyle DNA mapping for cancer patients by: – December 10, 2012 Up to 100,000 patients with cancer and rare diseases in England are to have their entire genetic code sequenced. The Prime Minister will announce £100m has been set aside for the project over the next three to five years. The aim is to give doctors a better understanding of patients’ genetic make-up, condition and treatment needs, and help develop new cancer treatments. One human genome contains three billion base pairs – the building blocks of DNA.Sequencing the code produces a huge amount of data. Although the price is falling fast, it currently costs £5,000 to £10,000 – which explains why no country in the world has embarked on mass DNA mapping on this scale. When it will start – who will do the genome sequencing and analysis – has not been worked out – nor which patients will be eligible for the voluntary testing. But the hope is by comparing genetic profiles of huge numbers of patients, it will allow scientists to understand why some do far better than others – and help in the quest for new treatments.Privacy campaigners are concern such a move could allow personal data to be passed on to private companies, such as insurance companies. But ministers insist the project is for medical research alone. For existing patients, DNA mapping may lead to better targeting of medicines. The power of this type of genetic analysis was demonstrated earlier this year when a study of 2,000 breast cancers showed the cancer should be thought of as 10 completely separate diseases.Personalised therapies There are already a handful of targeted treatments – for breast, lung, bowel and blood cancers – where tests for a single gene can reveal whether a patient is likely to respond. For example, breast cancer patients are tested to see if their tumour is positive for ‘Her2′, a protein that can accelerate the growth of malignant cells. If so they can benefit from Herceptin, a drug which works on patients with high levels of the Her2 protein.Whole genome mapping may yield more of these personalised therapies.Speaking ahead of the announcement David Cameron said: “By unlocking the power of DNA data, the NHS will lead the global race for better tests, better drugs and above all better care.”The chief medical officer for England, Prof Dame Sally Davies, said: “Single gene testing is already available across the NHS ranging from diagnosing cancers to assessing patients’ risk of suffering side effects from treatment.“At the moment, these tests focus on diseases caused by changes in a single gene. This funding opens up the possibility of being able to look at the three billion DNA pieces in each of us so we can get a greater understanding of the complex relationship between our genes and lifestyle.”There are a number of existing projects seeking to improve understanding of the genetics of cancer, such as Cancer Research UK’s ‘stratified medicine’ programme. The UK is part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium which is planning to sequence 50 different cancers and catalogue their different mutations. There are more than 200 types of cancer – it is a complex and highly resistant disease – the talk among specialists is less of cures and more of improved long-term outcomes. So most of the benefits from these ambitious projects are likely to be among the next generation of cancer patients.BBC News
Donegal needs more female entrepreneurs and the female led businesses in the county need to have the ambition to grow globally – that was one of the key messages from the National Women in Enterprise event held in Letterkenny recently. The event – one of 17 held across the country – heard Brenda Hegarty, Assistant Head of Enterprise in Donegal, explain that the number of women in enterprise in Ireland and in Donegal is under represented.“In Donegal, for example, despite the fact that more females than males are on our Start Your Own Business Course only 12% of our portfolio is female led.” There is a stark contrast in the numbers and amounts of grant aid to female led businesses in Donegal as well, she added.“It is worth noting that in Donegal, 20% of Grant Aid is awarded to female led businesses and grants to these 25 businesses total €380k with an average grant of €15k. In contrast, 80% of grant aid is awarded to male led businesses with 101 businesses awarded grant aid of €2.6m and an average grant of €25k.”But the Assistant Head of Enterprise in Donegal said there was ‘no use in lamenting’ and insisted women in business and those with business ideas, need to take action.Pictured at the National Women in Enterprise Day event held in Castlegrove House recently were from left: Michael Tunney, Head of Enterprise, Donegal; Agnes Lunny, Chief Executive of Positive Futures; Brenda Hegarty, Assistant Head of Enterprise, Donegal; Dr. Karl Thomas of Creatovation; Sports Star and broadcaster Anna Geary; Eve Anne McCarron, Local Enterprise Office, Donegal; Anne Brennan of Signworx the Donegal Ambassador for National Women in Enterprise Day; and Grace Korbel, Local Enterprise Office, Donegal. With that in mind she outlined details of a new pre-start initiative to encourage more females to turn their business ideas to reality. The Women with Ambition to grow a Global Business Programme (WAGs) is designed to support women with an idea to start a business with global potential. “We believe that with a little help, women can transform an idea into a reality. With that in mind, subject to demand, Local Enterprise Office, Donegal plans to design an interactive programme to support women to explore and test an idea to start and grow a business.” As well as details of the new ‘Women with Ambition to grow a Global Business’ programme, Brenda Hegarty also reminded those in attendance that applications for the Donegal Enterprise Awards are currently open.Details of the awards contest, the new WAGs programme and details of all the supports and services available from the LEO are available from the web site – localenterprise.ie/donegalThe National Women in Enterprise Day event held in Castlegrove House also heard from a panel of speakers who have overcome obstacles to become successful in their field. By Meagan FiddlerAPTN National NewsRED LAKE, Ont.-Stanley Fiddler says he was taken on a starlight tour by an OPP officer who picked him up on Oct. 29, drove down a highway, opened the door to the cruiser and dropped him off several kilometres from Red Lake, Ont.The officer has since been suspended by the OPP which is conducting an internal investigation of the incident.“He didn’t say nothing, just drove off down Hwy 35,” said Fiddler, in an interview with APTN National News. “He just opened the door and that is all.”Fiddler, from Sandy Lake First Nation, is an alcoholic who lives on the streets in this town about 300 kilometres north of Kenora, Ont.Venessa Keesick saw Fiddler walking down the highway that night, making his way back to town. She asked Fiddler what happened and then filed a complaint with the OPP.“(Fiddler) told me he had been drinking. He got picked up. He thought he was going to jail to sleep it off, but no, they turned down the highway and kept going and going,” said Keesick, in an interview. “He did say that he did distinguish the officer because he had an accent.”The complaint seems to be substantiated by the officer’s suspension.“The OPP is conducting an internal investigation into the release of a person in custody bya member of the Red Lake OPP detachment,” said a statement from the OPP. “A member of the Red Lake OPP detachment has been suspended from durty.”Keesick said she wasn’t surprised by Fiddler’s story of a starlight tour.“It’s happened before, but years ago to my friend and I’ve heard it happen before, but it’s pretty close to home because I used to work with the guy,” she said.Keesick got to know Fiddler at Red Lake’s emergency shelter.Sandy Middleton, the manager at the shelter, said he’s heard the same thing.“I’ve heard of it happening before, but it’s substantiated,” said Middleton.Middleton’s work with the homeless at the shelter gives him a good perspective of their daily struggles. He hopes this isn’t one more hardship added to Fiddler’s already full plate.“I think, if it did happen, it shouldn’t. These are people that really don’t have the acumen to look after themselves that you or i may. They depend on others to do that for them,” he said.Keesick says that’s why she filed the complaint, because she knew Fiddler wouldn’t.“Most of these people don’t have a voice. They keep quiet about bad things that happen,” she [email protected]
Mumbai: Malayalam actor Tony Luke says the fact that his performance in his Hindi debut “Badla” was well-received reflects there is no divide between talent from north and south. Tony made his acting debut in 2016 with the Malayalam movie “Oozham” and has since featured in three more films in south film industry. “Today an actor has a future in the film industry because content rules. The North and South have come together. Now it’s about Indian content versus the global, not North and South,” Tony told PTI. Also Read – Hilarie Burton, Jeffery Dean Morgan tie the knot “There are people like Karan Johar and Rajamouli coming together, to make truly Indian cinema and the times are only going to change for the better,” he added. Tony said when the project came his way, he was initially reluctant to audition as he felt there was “no chance” he would make it. “I thought my Hindi is bad, because I’m from the South so I didn’t even believe I could be a part of it, until Sujoy met me and said ‘you’re the boy.’ Sujoy decided to place me as an actor and I’m grateful for that. There’s no heavy pressure on me to be a star,” he said. Also Read – ‘Vaastav’ gave me the real sense of being an actor: Sanjay Dutt on film’s 20-year anniversary The actor said he feels “blessed” that he bagged the thriller, where his biggest takeaway was learning from megastar Amitabh Bachchan. “If someone told me last year that I would be a part of a big film such as this, I would’ve laughed it off. To be on the set and watch Mr Bachchan perform is surreal. As an actor, you take away so much just by observing him and imbibing his energy.” Going forward, Tony said, if everything falls in place, he will be soon seen in an international web series.
Alipurduar/Jalpaiguri: Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for criticising the Trinamool Congress-led Bengal government over its ‘involvement’ in the tainted Saradha and Narada scams, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee called Modi the “pied piper of thieves and corrupt people.””Just as the whole city had run after the pied piper, the thieves and corrupt people run after the fake chowkidar who gives them shelter and protection,” she said, adding: “the fake chowkidar addressed the rally today after sharing the dais with a person involved in the chit fund scam.” Banerjee was addressing a rally at Alipurduar on Sunday. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c detailsWhile addressing another election meeting at Jalpaiguri late on Sunday afternoon, she said: “BJP does not play any constructive role and its sole business is to incite the people of the Hills against those living in the plains.” Banerjee said BJP has no chance of coming back to power in Delhi. “It will lose the elections in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and Bengal. It will do badly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as well. Come May 23 and you will see how people will reject the party that survives on riot, loot and murder,” the Trinamool supremo said. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from ThursdayBanerjee alleged that the saffron party was spending “cash” to win the elections. “They are giving Rs 1,000 to people to attend their meeting and Rs 5,000 to cast vote in their favour. They have looted people’s money in the name of note ban and are now spending the money to win the elections. They have set up a five-star party office in Delhi by looting people,” she maintained, adding: “They think by changing some senior police officers they will get more votes. But in reality, the more they change police officers, the lesser their votes will be.” Criticising Modi for not opening closed tea gardens, she said: “The chaiwala had promised to open the closed tea gardens before the 2016 Assembly polls. Now there is no chai, milk or sugar and he has transformed into a fake chowkidar.” In Jalpaiguri, Banerjee gave a list of achievements of the Bengal government. “Kanyashree has helped 60 lakh girls, while one crore students have been benefitted by Sabuj Sathi. The state government has spent Rs 700 crore to pay crop insurance of the farmers. But BJP is jealous of Bengal and is not giving clearance to change the name of the state, which was passed in the state Assembly unanimously.” “When there was trouble in Darjeeling or Jangalmahal, Modi did not come to see the situation and now he has come to incite the people there,” she added. The Trinamool supremo reiterated that if voted to power, BJP will change the Indian Constitution. “In the name of NRC, BJP is harassing people. The names of 22 lakh Hindus and 20 lakh Muslims had been dropped from the NRC in Assam,” she said, adding that the Bengal government will never introduce NRC. She urged people to ensure BJP’s defeat in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, saying: “The quicker BJP is ousted, the better it will be for the nation.” She called on the young voters in both the constituencies to vote for Trinamool Congress candidates.
Kabul: A loud explosion and follow-up gunfire were heard in an ongoing assault near the Afghan communication ministry in central Kabul on Saturday, officials said. The attack occurred a day after talks fell apart between the Taliban and Afghan representatives. No one claimed immediate responsibility and there was no immediate word on casualties. “The information that we have is four attackers have placed themselves near the communication ministry and are engaged in gun battles with the Afghan security forces,” Amanduddin Shariati, a security official in Kabul told AFP. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from US Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said an explosion was heard near the communication ministry around 11:40 am (0710 GMT), followed by sporadic gunfire. Local television footage showed a small plume of smoke near the ministry, and people climbing out the windows on a lower level. Intermittent firing could still be heard more one hour after the blast, and the area had been cordoned off by security forces. The communication ministry is located in downtown Kabul, about two kilometres (1.25 miles) from the green zone. Also Read – Record number of 35 candidates in fray for SL Presidential polls It is the city’s main commercial area and has several large hotels. The communication ministry itself is an 18-storey building, thought to be the tallest building in Kabul. The explosion comes a week after the Taliban announced their annual spring offensive and amid ongoing fighting across Afghanistan. The Afghan branch of the Islamic State group has also previously carried out multiple deadly attacks in Kabul. The capital has in recent weeks enjoyed a period of relative calm, after a horrific year last year in which it saw a string of attacks including a massive bomb that was concealed in an ambulance and killed more than 100 people. This week in the Qatari capital Doha, a summit planned between the Taliban and officials from across Afghanistan fell apart at the last minute due to bickering over who should attend the conference. The collapse comes at a critical time and amid continued bloodshed in Afghanistan, where the Taliban now control or influence about half of Afghanistan and 3,804 civilians were killed there last year, according to a UN tally. Taliban officials are separately negotiating with the United States, which wants to forge a peace deal with the militants. (AFP)
