Arsenal legend Adams criticises Emery for shoddy defenceby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal legend Tony Adams believes Unai Emery has yet to solve his side’s defensive issues. The Gunners have kept just three clean sheets from 21 Premier League games this season. And Adams, a legendary centre-back in his time, thinks Emery must do more to work on his leaky back-line.”I think the manager has gone three at the back, four at the back,” he said on BT Sport. “He’s never had them settled. They’re not keeping clean sheets.”Now he’s going back to a back four again. He can’t make up his mind. They need a settled back line and I don’t think he’s got it.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say
GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 10: ESPN reporter Lou Holtz looks on during the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game between the Oregon Ducks and the Auburn Tigers at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 10, 2011 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Texas head coach Charlie Strong served as an defensive assistant for Lou Holtz – both at Notre Dame and later at South Carolina. This week, Holtz stopped by Austin, Texas, to help out Strong and his staff ahead of the 2015 season. Holtz gave an inspiring speech to the team, and focused on what it takes to win a national championship. He also showed that he’s rather gifted when it comes to magic.Around the 3:30 mark in the below video, Holtz pulls the famed ripped newspaper magic trick on the squad. He actually does a really solid job, and the players are clearly impressed.Holtz certainly has his detractors, but it’s pretty cool that he’s willing to help out former staff members. If you’re looking to wow a crowd and learn the trick yourself, here’s a decent walkthrough.
YouTube/Right Side BroadcastingOn Tuesday night, members of the Iowa football and wrestling teams presented Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump with a Hawkeyes jersey. During the event, after inviting members of the team to the stage, Trump stated that they endorsed him.Obviously, that could just be bluster on Trump’s part, but Iowa athletes’ representation on the campaign trail could be an NCAA violation. The Daily Caller points out the language from NCAA guidelines.According to the NCAA’s Advertising and Promotional Guidelines, student athletes are not allowed to appear in any advertisement that “endorses a political candidate or party, or … advocates a viewpoint on controversial issues of public importance.”This probably won’t result in anything major, and odds are Trump and the players may be unaware of the violations here, but for college athletes, it is almost always best to avoid things like this.[The Daily Caller]
Reading boss Jose Gomes has played down the impact made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and claimed the identity of the Manchester United manager “doesn’t matter” given the quality of their squad.Portuguese Gomes, an associate of Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho for 20 years, takes his Championship strugglers to Old Trafford on Saturday to face a United side rejuvenated in recent weeks.Solskjaer has recorded four successive wins since taking over from Mourinho on an interim basis – matching a club record set by the great Matt Busby – and lifted the clouds that seemed to be gathering under the former Chelsea boss. Gomes, however, was quick to highlight the role of the players in United’s upturn in form.Asked to assess their FA Cup third-round opponents, he told a media conference: “These players, and it’s my opinion, even if nobody is on the bench, they can win without one [a manager].”You can’t say they are stronger now to in the past. It doesn’t matter the manager during the week – they can win the matches.”Gomes talked up the impact Mourinho has had on his countrymen but insisted he would not seek his advice on how to beat United. He added: “He’s a great coach, it’s very difficult to achieve what he did. I don’t know what happened [at United]. I respect him and, for Portuguese coaches, it’s important everything he achieved, but Manchester United decided differently.”They are playing good football, the players are happy to be playing like they are.”It’s a new manager with different ideas, more freedom for the players. The players are showing they are comfortable in this situation with this freedom.”Reading lie 23rd in the Championship and are without a win in 10 games but Gomes – who took over at the Madejski Stadium on December 22 – is excited at the prospect of facing a club of United’s stature.”They are one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said. “If you go to China, South America, all the kids follow and choose to play PlayStation as Manchester United. “It’s a special moment to play against these teams. The atmosphere at Old Trafford, it’s like a football party, and my players must be happy to be part of it. It will be a very tough game for us but, in football, anything can happen.”
Willian has called on Callum Hudson-Odoi to turn down Bayern Munich’s £35 million ($45m) approach and stay at Chelsea, adding that he can become ‘one of the best in the world’ by playing at Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old handed in a transfer request ahead of Sunday’s 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday but was still able to score, with Willian getting the other two, as the Blues booked their place in the sixth round of the FA Cup.Hudson-Odoi has grown frustrated with his lack of game time under Maurizio Sarri, leading to him to push for Chelsea to accept the offer from Bayern. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? It was just his 15th senior appearance on Sunday, but Willian thinks that the youngster can become one of the best in the world and says that everyone at Chelsea is asking him to stay.“Yes of course. We want him to stay,” Willian told reporters at Stamford Bridge. “He’s a great talent. A great player. We tell him all the time to stay here.”We don’t want him to leave. He can become one of the best players for Chelsea and one of the best players in the world in the future. He has to stay.“The quality he has, he has everything. He’s fast. Of course he can improve, he’s only 18, but he can improve a lot to become one of the best players. You can see from his goal that he has quality.“When you see players who score goals like this you have to say he has quality. We know how important he is for this club and for us and we just want him to stay.”Meanwhile, Gonzalo Higuain made his debut after joining Chelsea on loan for six months with an option to buy him from Juventus at the end of the season.Higuain had an underwhelming display but he had an opportunity to open his account from a spot-kick, as Willian offered him the chance to take the penalty. Higuain declined and Willian scored his 50th Chelsea goal, before netting again late on.Willian thinks that Higuain might want to score a beautiful first goal and thanked him for helping him reach the landmark.“I wanted to give him the ball for him to take the penalty and to score his first goal for Chelsea, but he said, ’no, you can take it, no problem’. That was the conversation,” he added. “Maybe he wants to score a beautiful first goal. But it was a good conversation.”“I want to score more goals for Chelsea. Sometimes it’s not easy but I work hard to do my best.”Higuain is likely to become a key figure for Maurizio Sarri this season as they rekindle their connection that saw the 31-year-old net 36 times in 35 games in the 2015-16 season, breaking the all time Serie A scoring record in a single campaign in the process. And Willian noticed signs that Higuain will have a major impact as Chelsea continue to fight on all four fronts.“It was good. You can see he’s a very good player, intelligent,” the Brazilian said.“Do some movements. Come forward, too, go behind the defenders. I think he can of course improve a lot, this was just the first game. I think he will help us a lot this season.”“He has quality, he has everything to score goals for Chelsea.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.
Marek Hamsik is on the verge of leaving Napoli, head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed, with a move to China seemingly on the horizon.Napoli captain Hamsik, who is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker, has been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League for some time, with Dalian Yifang reportedly favourites to secure his signature. And a move now looks to be edging closer, with Ancelotti confirming that Hamsik – who played 74 minutes of Napoli’s 3-0 win over Sampdoria in Serie A on Saturday – wants to leave Stadio San Paolo. We are not hiding anything. As far as I and the club are concerned, if the player wants to try this new experience, we are inclined to give him what he wants.”17 – Napoli are unbeaten in their last 17 home games in Serie A: a record among teams currently in the competition. Liverpool “haven’t missed” Philippe Coutinho and have no need to bring him back, says Dean Saunders, with the Reds having done a “good deal” with Barcelona that has allowed them to improve without a Brazilian playmaker.Back in the winter transfer window of 2018, the Reds reluctantly agreed to offload a talented South American to Camp Nou.His sale brought a long-running saga to a close and allowed Jurgen Klopp to dip into the market with the funds generated from a big-money deal. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Those brought in, such as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, have allowed Liverpool to become Premier League title challengers and Champions League winners. With that in mind, and there further potential to be unlocked in some of those now at Anfield, former Reds striker Saunders sees no reason why Klopp would be tempted to try and re-sign Coutinho. He told talkSPORT: “Liverpool haven’t missed him.“They lost one game all season and lost the league by one point when Man City won each of their last 14 games, so they didn’t bottle it.“Positionally have they missed him? No.“[Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah and [Roberto] Firmino are the front three, and [Divock] Origi and [Xherdan] Shaqiri have come in and done their bit.“If you were critical, they may be lacking a really inventive midfield player. [Georginio] Wijnaldum, [Jordan] Henderson, [James] Milner, Fabinho – they’re all workmanlike.“But I think we’ll see more of [Naby] Keita this season; he was brought in to carry the ball, go into the last third and make things happen.“What a good deal it was – they sold Coutinho for £142m and they signed Van Dijk, Fabinho, Keita, Shaqiri, Alisson… and won the Champions League!“Great business, well done Jurgen Klopp.“You get lots of criticism in football, but that was a good move.”While Liverpool have flourished in the wake of Coutinho’s departure, the 27-year-old has struggled to make the expected impact at Barcelona. He has contributed 21 goals and 11 assists to the Blaugrana cause across 18 months, but he is not the talismanic presence that the Liga champions were hoping to see him become.
